Christmas Market in Old Town in Stockholm is a must! I am celebrating Christmas here as a newbie in Stockholm and our very first time visiting the Christmas market (julmarknad) in Gamla Stan was quite fun. It is said that the tradition of Christmas market in the Old Town began from the medieval times, and touted to be the oldest market in Stockholm and Sweden.
The Old Town Christmas Market is free to visit and open to everyone during the month before Christmas Eve. There were many stalls located in the main square of Old Town with handcrafted items such as candles, Christmas wreaths, and foods from glögg, candied almonds, smoked reindeer and sausages.
It’s a great way to spend the holiday season with friends and family simply by walking down the streets of Gamla Stan and taking in the sights and sounds. It’s even better since the weather is chilly and we could enjoy a hot cup of glögg that goes well with some roasted candied almonds.
To be honest, I was a little disappointed that the stalls didn’t have much choices of hot cooked food; except sausages, but I guess it might be due to space constraints since the stalls were tiny. Overall we had a good time soaking in the festive atmosphere and mingling with the crowd even though it was drizzling.
Here are some of the pictures I took during our time spent at Gamla Stan, hope you will enjoy it!
