Life in Sweden without a personal number can be a struggle sometimes. A personal number is the most important number in Sweden that serves as your identification number. I am only allowed to get a coordination number (samordningsnummer) because of the validity of my visa, which is less than one year. I thought I could do almost everything if I have my coordination number. But, no. So let’s look at the different potential problems without a personal number in Sweden.

Opening a bank account in Sweden
I read a lot about the struggles of opening a bank account without a personal number. During that time, I didn’t have my coordination number yet, so I already expected the worst.
The first bank that I went to is Handelsbanken in Stockholm. I managed to open a bank account by explaining that it is for salary. It’s also necessary to bring your work permit, passport, and employment contract as proof.
I had to wait for a couple of days for the appointment because, as far as I can remember, they have to review the documents I submitted first.
Swish and BankID in Sweden
Unfortunately, you cannot register in Swish and BankID if you do not have a personal number. Regardless if you have your coordination number, it’s still not allowed.
Sweden is cashless, which means you can pay anyone or a lot of stores by using Swish. It is a hassle when the only mode of payment is Swish.
Online delivery or registration to online services
I wanted to buy stuff online, but some online stores require you to input your personal number upon registration. I tried using my coordination number, but the system did not recognize it.
I remember I had to contact several customer support and ask if I can still register using my coordination number. One was kind enough to create an account for me!
Collecting packages in Sweden without a personal number
Okay, so now you have successfully ordered online! Yay! What would happen if they do not send your package directly to your home? Well, you have to collect it from the nearest shop.
Just a few days ago, I went to pick up the item that I ordered, but they were looking for my personal number. I said I don’t have it yet, but they explained that I could not receive my item if I do not have a personal number.
I tried giving them my coordination number, luckily, it worked, and I got my item.
Enrolling in Swedish for immigrants in Sweden
I wanted to study at SFI (Swedish for Immigrants), but I don’t meet the requirements. I don’t have a personal number, and I’m not from an EU-country.
